Open Water Rowing Center is the host for the annual Open Ocean Regatta, held every spring for over 40 years. There are three courses of varying length and water conditions for open water scullers in shells and traditional boats, both singles, doubles and quads.
The most challenging course is the 7.6 nm Diablo Course (14 km). From the start near downtown Sausalito, this course heads out under the Golden Gate Bridge to Diablo Point, and then back under the bridge to Belvedere’s Peninsula Point before finishing back at the Sausalito waterfront. Rowers from many clubs in the west join OWRC regulars in the challenge of this spectacular course with unpredictable conditions.
The race is held on a Sunday in April, and special race-prep clinics are offered in the weeks leading to the regatta. OWRC members are critical support for the regatta, volunteering in roles ranging from parking control/shell unloading to race officials and BBQ organizers. There’s a job for everybody!
The post-race barbecue is a fun get-together for area open-water enthusiasts.
